Title: That's Amore
Author: [personal profile] fujiidom
Characters: Sheldon/Penny
Length: 7k
Summary: Sheldon and Penny backpack through Europe, contemplate life, dissect Friends meta, and fall in love.

I keep trying to stop being so involved in the BBT fandom, but ugh, fabulous authors keep writing fabulous stories, the nerve! This Saturnalia pinch-hit by Fujiidom is a bit different than the standard get-together in that it's set several years in the future, when the characters have matured and settled a bit. The accompanying fanmix is gorgeous, featuring the author's usual deft hand at both graphics and music selection, and if that's not enough, the story kicks off with the perfect Neil Gaiman quote. Written to feed the addict, I swear.

Title: Religion in Modern Love and War.
Author: [personal profile] cereal
Characters: Sheldon/Penny
Length: 6k
Summary: N/A

Must I rec everything [personal profile] cereal writes? Yes, yes I must. One of the fandom's favorite authors surprised us all with a pinch hit for this year's Saturnalia exchange, and as always, every story she writes is the best one yet. Here, Sheldon and Penny team up to get Leonard and Amy together. Whacky hijinks ensue! It's the interplay between Penny's musings about how Mary Cooper's faith affected her son and the subtle, slow-burn dynamic between Sheldon and Penny that make this tale stand out to me; although more fics present a Sheldon inexperienced in and unsure of sexual matters, I appreciate how this Sheldon's confidence works in his favor. A++.

Title: The Home Turf Advantage
Author: [profile] boonies
Characters: Sheldon/Penny
Length: 3k
Summary: Maybe he can build a time machine and stop Penny from ever moving into the building.

Once upon a time I wrote a story in which Penny and Sheldon had sex based on a contract, and I don't know why it never occurred to me to take that to the next step but I am glad I didn't, because [profile] boonies has produced something truly awesome here. There is a contract, and there is exactly the combativeness you would expect between Penny and Sheldon, and there is also epic teaming up. Love the commentary from Raj and Howard, love the dialogue, and overall love this story.

Title: The Punnett Square Venture
Author: [profile] boonies
Characters: Sheldon/Penny
Length: 5,000 words
Summary: Sheldon decides to reproduce. To everyone's horror, it won't be through mitosis.

[profile] boonies is consistently one of my favorite authors in the fandom. She just keeps getting better with each story, and I'm always left sort of floundering in awe in the wake of every work. Her writing is very subtly brilliant - laugh-out-loud funny, but still avoiding all the gimmicks that can make the show tiresome, and with a depth to the characters rarely found outside of the best fanfiction. (Which, luckily, this is!) She also writes the most fantastic group dynamic, and juggles all five of the main characters while still giving appropriate focus to the pairing. Now I'm talking in circles, oh god, but this story! So good!

Title: Genetic Drift
Author: [personal profile] ishie
Characters: Jayne, Kaylee, Simon, River, Sheldon/Penny
Length: 1400 words
Summary: N/A

You know how sometimes an author writes a story and your brain instantly recognizes that story, even though you never could have invented anything half as spectacular yourself? For my brain, this is that story. Flailing at the concept aside, Ishie has an ear for Firefly; if the show has a voice, she captures it brilliantly.

Title: Normal as Blueberry Pie
Author: [personal profile] dashakay
Characters: Penny/Sheldon
Length: 3,200 words
Summary: Penny and Sheldon visit her parents in Nebraska. Sheldon wears jeans and maybe a cowboy hat. Penny explains her deep, abiding love for Justin Timberlake. Jell-O salad is consumed in bulk.

This story appeared out of the night and swept me off my feet. Although it isn't terribly long, it reads like a much more involved story - there's a definite "tip of the iceberg" feel, if that makes sense. A good established relationship story draws me in like nothing else, and "Normal as Blueberry Pie" is nothing if not established relationship fic as it should always be written.

I love the portrait [personal profile] dashakay paints of Penny's childhood home; she uses broad strokes with just enough detail to make Penny's family feel real and rounded - brief glimpses that hint at years of history. There are two qualities about the story, too, that show a truly gifted writer is at work behind the scenes. The first is the "Aha!" moment - the moment where the reader steps back and thinks, Never in a thousand years would I have thought to write that, but it makes perfect sense. This fic is crafted entirely of such moments - a teenaged Penny, for instance, naming her horse Justin Timberlake.

The second quality is putting a character in a scenario that is completely removed from his or her usual setting and then making it believable. [personal profile] dashakay get Sheldon into jeans and on a horse, and then promptly acknowledges exactly how out of place and ridiculous horse-borne Sheldon would be:
"Penny, take the picture and let me down from here immediately."

She takes the picture with her iPhone and helps him down off Cloud. He looks incredibly happy to be on solid ground.

Sheldon takes the cowboy hat off and hands it to her. "So help me, Penny, if you show that picture to anyone, you're dead."

She's already sent it to Leonard, Raj and Howard. Four bars of coverage, even out here in Bumfuck Egypt. Technology is beautiful.
Gorgeously characterized, and, all in all, one of my new favorite stories.

Title: Keep Your Clothes On
Author: [profile] juniperlane
Characters: Sheldon/Penny, Penny/career
Length: 2,961 words
Summary: N/A

In honor of the opening of [profile] penny_career, it only seems appropriate that I rec a Penny/career fic. This one is the perfect story to kick back and read after a long day; there is Penny hobnobbing with the stars, and before that there is Penny dressing Sheldon in fashionable clothes, and after that there is Penny licking Sheldon's forearms. Basically there is everything you could want in a story - humor and feeling and sex and Our Woman sharing a splash of success with her insufferable and supportive boyfriend.

Title: There Was a Child Went Forth
Author: [personal profile] dashakay
Characters: Sheldon/Penny
Length: 6,834 words
Summary: One plus one equals three. Solve that equation, Sheldon.

First, a brief note: This story is actually the fifth part in the Driving Lessons series, which is fabulous and completely worthy of a rec on its own behalf. I don't believe you need to have read the previous parts in order to enjoy "There Was a Child," though.

So the thing is that well-written babyfic is one of my greatest and guiltiest pleasures. The problem is that well-written babyfic is damn hard to find, but search no longer! [personal profile] dashakay has written a realistic, almost gritty story that dazzles, and not in the lame Edward Cullen way. The guys order take out and eat it in the hospital room while Penny is in labor, which is the best illustration I can give of the excellent characterization. I downright love the way the author writes Penny, too, and just. *happy noises* Try this one even if you usually steer clear of baby stories.

Title: pandora's mask
Author: [personal profile] montycrowley
Characters: Sheldon/Penny
Length: 3,904 words
Summary: penny is a spy and it all goes to hell.

I don't want to be totally repetitive and just rec everything [personal profile] montycrowley writes, but everything she writes is just so rec-able! (New word - get on it, dictionaries!) This is one of my favorite stories to come out of [community profile] sheldon_penny's first holiday swap, and I almost prefer it to the show (strike that, I do prefer it). The way pieces from the canon are fitted together with [personal profile] montycrowley's Penny-as-a-spy premise is nothing short of brilliant, and in the interim: scorching hot tie!porn.

Title: Kafka, Schmafka
Author: [personal profile] ishie
Characters: Sheldon/Penny, Leonard, Raj, Howard, Missy
Length: 20k
Summary: N/A

The first and most important thing to know about this story is that it has Sheldon and a little girl playing FASHION SHOW. (There are even ponies. It is FABULOUS: "...Without rules, what's to stop me from declaring that my doll is the new wardrobe coordinator and forcing all of yours to wear substandard outfits? Or, better yet, to discard your premise altogether and move the narrative in a direction better suited to my knowledge and skills sets?")

The other thing you should know is that Howard turns into a fairy, so it's kindasorta crackfic, but very, very well written despite that. Love the established relationship between Sheldon and Penny, but it's also wonderful the way the group actually feels like a close-knit group of friends, when too often on the show they simply don't. Six thumbs straight up for tight writing in an urban fantasy.

(If you're new to the fandom, I'd recommend the rest of [personal profile] ishie's fic as a superb introduction to the fandom; you can find her stories under her author tag at [community profile] sheldon_penny or at [community profile] ishieland.)

Title: Two
Author: [personal profile] fujiidom
Characters: Sheldon/Penny
Length: 2k
Summary: N/A

[personal profile] fujiidom is consistently one of my very favorite authors in the BBT fandom, and even in a short standalone piece like this it's easy to see why. She has a habit of making the characters act in ways that, coming from a lesser writer, seem completely unrealistic, and yet this is perhaps the only story where Sheldon Cooper cries and it's still so perfectly him and so perfectly in line with the tone of the story. I should also point out that I'm a sap for well-written baby!fic, and even thought there aren't technically babies in this it still sates that need nicely.

Title: Green With Something
Author: [personal profile] cereal
Characters: Sheldon/Penny
Length: 2387 words
Summary: N/A

Penny in green body paint! Sheldon cosplaying as Spock! Nerd trash talking! [personal profile] cereal is probably the most recommended author in the fandom, and for good reason; she has a lock on Penny's voice that is second to none. It's also nice to see a BBT fic that doesn't draw the obvious parallel between Spock/Uhura and Sheldon/Penny. Short and funny.

Summary: This book will either be the death of Penny... or the solution to all her problems.

When I say that everything this woman writes is golden? I mean everything she writes is FRIGGIN' AMAZING. There is not a single aspect of this story in particular that is not utter brilliance, but what elevates the story to genius are the excerpts from a fictional book that parallel Sheldon and Penny's story. GENIUS, I SAY.

Title: One Day I'll Get Up the Courage
Author: [personal profile] anythingbutgrey
Characters: Leonard/Penny
Length: 2k
Summary: Penny’s always been a liar. That’s why she became an actress.

A lot of the time I scroll straight past any BBT fic that isn't Sheldon-centric, but [personal profile] anythingbutgrey is one of my favorite authors from the Twilight fandom (yes, yes). Her writing is always really, really gorgeous, so I had to give this a try and it is just as wonderful as I anticipated. I love Penny's POV and the little touches of humor, but most of all it's the way Penny misses Leonard, her best friend, that gets to me -

This man looks too much like Leonard from behind to really be Leonard. She’s gotten him confused with a couple of people this summer. Just a few. As it turns out, most people don’t like crazy blonde chicks jumping on their backs and proclaiming, “You’re back! You’re back!” Some people are just touchy like that. Go figure.

I think that's a point that people like me who are more inclined to ship Sheldon/Penny miss, that Leonard and Penny are really comfortable friends, and I do love a good best-friends-turned-lovers story.

Title: The Earth Moved 1,117.7 Miles In Our Kitchen
Author: [profile] rashaka, with illustrations by [personal profile] irrel
Pairing: Sheldon/Penny
Length: 2900 words
Summary: Like Wonder Woman, Superman, She-Ra and all those characters her geeky friends cherished, Penny knew in one single, glorious moment what she had to do.

One of the sweetest S/P stories I've read, and the illustrations are incredible. It's just a short vignette that gives a glimpse into a pivotal moment in the development of Sheldon and Penny's relationship, but the characters feel so well-rounded that the story is as satisfying as any long, plotty fic. Don't miss out on reading the comments, either - there are sketches and drabbles from the creators.

Title: Hooray for Our Side
Author: [personal profile] cereal
Pairing: Sheldon/Penny
Length: 8441 words
Summary: N/A

Does the BBT fandom ever rejoice more than when [personal profile] cereal posts a new story? This is my absolute favorite of her works, hands-down, and that is not an easy decision, but the way Sheldon & co. fit seamlessly into a universe just slightly off from canon is brilliant. MOVIE THEATER AU, okay, and the best Peny voice in the fandom, 'nuff said.

Title: Nothing Important Happened Today
Author: [personal profile] ishie
Pairing: Sheldon/Penny
Length: 27,000 words
Summary: N/A

I've only just started combing through this year's [profile] bigbangbigbang stories, but I leapt as Ishie's as soon as it was posted. Her characterization of the dynamic between Sheldon and Penny is always excellent, but it's the way she reinvents the X-Files to fit the different characters that makes this story something more than the usual fare. Compelling whether you are or aren't a fan of XF.
