Title: Stalking Zuko
Author: emletish
Characters: Zuko/Katara (with Suki/Sokka, Toph, Aang, Hakoda, and Iroh)
Length: 880k
Summary: Katara keeps a journal of all the shenanigans that the Gaang run into.

I'm going to recommend this series with the caveat that the writing itself is pretty unusual in style - this is set up as Katara's journal, there are occasional errors in spelling, and some of the phrasing is highly, uh...Australian. That said, this is absolutely one of my favorite Avatar stories, because while the voices aren't always dead-on, the characterization and worldbuilding absolutely are.

The first part starts shortly after Zuko joins up with the others in S3, and the next eight-hundred thousand words are an in-depth expansion of everything that happens from that point up through the post-war treaty negotiations at Ba Sing Se. It's also canon-compliant (not including LoK or the comics) and Zuko/Katara, and the author does an amazing job of building up the characters to support the premise of the main pairing. On top of that, this is one of the few stories I've read that manages to balance the humor of the show with the serious subject matter without either one feeling out of place; the main characters are still obviously teenagers, but they're teenagers put into world-changing situations. The Zuko/Katara side is just as excellent, with a lot of time put into developing them individually and as friends before the romantic plot launches.

Seriously one of my favorites! As a side note, the author's notes at the end of each chapter are worth reading - they're exhaustively thorough and just as interesting as the story itself.

Title: Whizbang and the Flyboy
Author: circ_bamboo
Characters: Carol/Rhodey, Tony/Pepper, ensemble
Length: 16k
Summary: When an eccentric billionaire genius drags Carol Danvers off to be a replacement bridesmaid for a photo shoot, she hopes it'll just be a couple hours of her time. But her partner for the shoot, the best man, is none other than the devastatingly-handsome Lieutenant Colonel James Rhodes. Will she be able to keep her hands--and her heart--to herself?

My verbatim reaction to this story was basically just enthusiastic yelling.

Title: the world's a stage
Author: torigates
Characters: Jake/Rosa
Length: 7k
Summary: In fall of 2009 Rosa showed up at Jake's apartment unannounced to propose marriage. Which was weird for a number of reasons, primarily because Jake had no idea she even knew where he lived.

"No seriously," he said, once he stopped laughing. "Why're you here."

She looked at him with a raised eyebrow. "One thousand push-ups."

"Cool," Jake said. "Let me get my coat."

I can't say why I went looking for Jake/Rosa, although I did enjoy their dynamic in "Pontiac Bandit," but somehow in the course of rambling through the B99 archive I stumbled into the most perfectly executed secret marriage story ever. Funny? Check. In-character? Check. Accidentally falling in love? Double check. Borrowing a phrase from [personal profile] odyle: "Everyone go home, the B99 fandom has peaked."

If you like this story, you should probably go write more Jake/Rosa, though. I'm just saying, it's only fair.

Title: Heart over Mind
Author: Regann
Characters: Hermione/Snape
Length: 186k
Summary: Something odd about Hermione causes her to have unexpected reaction to a love potion. Only it's one which no one expected. How could a lack of reaction cause so much trouble? AU to Books 5 and 6.

So this is a story you will enjoy only if you are a very specific type of person, and that type is limited to readers who like Snape/Hermione and don't mind stories that bear little relation to canon. That said, this was an absolutely lovely indulgence that I devoured over the course of a weekend. In the best tradition of the genre, it emphasizes intellectual compatibility and includes a lengthy correspondence between Hermione and her former teacher, thoughtful exploration of magical traditions from other cultures, plenty of emphasis on Hermione's goals and character, and a fanon Snape that fortunately stays on the tolerable side of the absurd. It's an old-school het epic in its natural habitat, and you can't beat that for a good time.

Title: Each In Its Own Way
Author: ishie
Characters: Ann/Joe
Length: 3k
Rating: G
Summary: Maybe derailed trains and bar brawls weren't the most glamourous of subjects to cover, but Joe Bradley was back in New York at last.

I volunteered to beta this story for [personal profile] ishie despite never having seen Roman Holiday, fell in love with the characters, ran off to watch the movie, and was so desperate for exactly this follow-up that I re-read the story immediately afterward. The atmosphere is perfect, carrying the champagne mood of the source material over to 1950s Brooklyn without missing a note, and there's this sort of rolling rhythm to the writing that imitates the original script and particularly comes through in the excellent dialogue. Seriously, it's a fantastic reunion piece, one of those stories that just makes me happy!

Title: that boy is a monster
Author: Randstad
Characters: Hannibal/Beverly, implied Hannibal/Will
Length: 3k
Summary: Beverly doesn't see the harm in a night in with Dr. Lecter. (To Will's chagrin, neither does Dr. Lecter.)

You know how sometimes you come across a story that is so perfectly original and understated and awesome that you can't even hold on to your envy? That is this story. Although (shadow of Clarice Starling aside) Bev and Hannibal are my two favorite characters on the show, it never would've occurred to me to throw them together at all, much less in this way. A deft fic that manages to be hilarious without losing realism or the undercurrent of horror.

Title: A Threat Disguised as a Suggestion
Author: mirandu
Characters: Clarice Starling, Hannibal Lecter
Length: 2k
Summary: Playing with/mixing canons between the Hannibal TV series and the novels/movies. One interpretation of how the first meeting between Dr. Lecter and the FBI trainee Clarice Starling might go, with the added history of Miriam Lass between them. (Some brief mentions of violence -- and, uh, cannibalism obviously -- but nothing too graphic in here.)

Absolutely brilliant recreation of Lecter and Starling's first meeting tailored for the NBC universe. I've stumbled across some show!verse stories that don't do justice to Starling's character, but here she's the perfect balance of novice and determinator. The Lecter POV also blends art and brutality in just the right measures without veering into overly lurid writing.

Title: Redemption Road
Authors: The Redemption Team
Characters: Dean/Castiel, Sam, Bobby
Length: 652k
Summary: With Castiel having set himself up as the new God, drunk on power and volatile as a nuclear reactor, Dean, Sam, and Bobby find themselves on the run from the jealous, capricious monster wearing the face of their friend. Desperate for protection and wary of his brother’s mental state since Castiel unlocked Sam's memories of Hell, Dean knows Castiel must be defused before he can wreak further havoc in Heaven or on Earth. (...)

Forty-two parts and this still isn't long enough! Virtual season, well-plotted, decently written, and excellently characterized; I blew threw the whole thing in three days and then writhed on the floor, gnashing my teeth, rending my clothing, and wailing for more episodes. My absolute favorite thing is the Lovecraftian influence, but it's also worth noting that the series explores relationships other than Dean and Cas's, including Dean's time with Lisa. (I am always happy when Lisa isn't glossed over.) A+. Would read again.

Title: Allegiance
Authors: Bookwrm389
Characters: Team Mustang (with Roy/Riza)
Length: 94k
Summary: When the Eastern Rebellion came to an end, one man looked on his comrades with the eyes of a king. One by one, we became his soldiers and he became our leader. We are Colonel Roy Mustang's most loyal subordinates, and these are our stories.

Really fantastic story that takes the time to examine each of Roy's subordinates in context of their relationship with him. The writing could use a little polishing in places, but overall that's a minor flaw in the face of how encompassing and thoughtful each chapter is. I love how Roy's layers are peeled back gradually, but while he is the center of the piece, the rest of the characters are given just as much room to speak and grow. I found myself particularly enjoying Breda and his interactions with Havoc.

Riza's chapter is pretty heavy on the Royai, as is the epilogue, but the other parts are more subtle on the shippy moments. Should be enjoyable for anyone who prefers gen, too.

Title: Selfish Favors
Author: Turdle
Characters: Riza/Roy, ensemble
Length: 27k (WIP)
Summary: Roy Mustang was fairly certain that Riza Hawkeye had no intentions of retiring just to settle down, and for that he loved her. However, when it appears that he’ll have to run for Office after Grumman's retirement, Roy proposes she become something more to him - a First Lady and a political partner. After all, every powerful man has an even more powerful woman standing behind him.

If I try to talk too much about this story I'll end up writing a six thousand word essay on all the reasons I boarded the USS Hawkeye/Mustang (hint: there are a lot of them), but suffice to say that this fic has an excellent plot, excellent characterization, and was written specifically to combat the rash of stories where Riza resigns from the military to become the Fuhrer's wife.

While I suspect it's been abandoned (the last update was in 2011), it was originally written as a oneshot and stands pretty well on its own.

Pairing: Derek/Stiles
Length: 31k
Summary: "Today is Scott's first day of kindergarten and Derek is terrified."

I promise not to inflict too many Teen Wolf recs on my admittedly small (but wonderful!) audience, but this one is too delightful not to share. I think it's easily readable even if you haven't seen TW, as it's an AU that reads more like a well-plotted gay romance novella than anything involving werewolves. Lovely slow build and lovely banter from one of my favorite authors; if you're looking for a lighthearted escape, this fits to the letter.

Title: Home Before Midnight
Author: Fyre
Pairing: Belle/Rumpelstiltskin
Length: 11k
Summary: Sometimes, you have to trust in others to help you find your happily ever after.

So you've been bitten by the Once Upon a Time bug...Fyre is the author to read. She does fantastic Belle/Rumpelstiltskin, although I think what I like best about her stories is that she doesn't isolate our intrepid couple from the rest of the fairy tale characters. ANYWAY even though pretty much everything Fyre writes is my favorite, this is my go-to fic when I've just finished rewatching "Skin Deep" and I need a happy ending. It also has a sequel, Waiting to Be Cast.

I think probably everyone knows about Crack Van, but it's an active community that also happens to be a great resource for older fandoms. Because there are so many entries (over 20,000) posted by so many different fans, the stories themselves can vary wildly in quality and taste, and it can be difficult to dig through the tags - because of the large volume of recs, posts are tagged only by fandom. My first choice for older and less represented fandoms (the Star Trek recs alone, my god) and my last choice for fandoms I can find on any more recent rec site!

(Also it's Saturday.)

(Also I'll run out of Follow Friday posts soon, but this is a solid way to clean up my sidebar while still keeping track of the places I go for recommendations.)

Title: Sustain II - Refrain
Authors: MaybeAmanda & Onemillionnine
Characters: Sherlock/Molly, Sarah/John
Length: WIP
Summary: He could fix this.

Part of me thinks I might be premature in recommending this, since only the first of three parts has been posted, but then I remember that I've read chapter one six times daily since it was posted and I think: NOPE.

The strange thing about Sherlock/Molly is that it isn't a ship I would ever want to become canon, but 'Sustain' is such a rounded universe and it treats the individual characters with such respect that I reread the story six times daily. But seriously, the characterization is so revealing and if that isn't enough for you: Molly, and if that still isn't enough for you: Sherlock having a staring contest with his baby.

Fancake is one of my newer finds, but it's quickly become one of my go-to sites for discovering fic because it's an incredibly well organized thematic recs community. Anyone can post a rec as long as the story fits within the current theme, which I think changes on a weekly basis. (Maybe twice monthly?) Only completed stories are allowed, which isn't such a draw for me but I know makes a difference to plenty of other readers.

Fleeting Fancies is my absolute favorite rec site and has been for years. The breadth of recommendations is incredible; I think there's maybe been three fandoms I haven't been able to find on the site, both for eastern and western media. Pretty sure the site started for anime and manga recs, but the live action and comics sections are amazingly comprehensive, and although the site has a shippy slant (both het and slash, although femslash is a little rarer), there's plenty of different pairings represented.

The LiveJournal/Dreamwidth mirrors tend to update a little more often, but I find the main site itself a bit easier to navigate. My only complaint is that [livejournal.com profile] beckerbell doesn't include the author's summary, but her write-ups are so comprehensive I usually don't notice the lack. If I had to rely on only on rec site, this would be it!

Characters: Shepard/Garrus, Chakwas
Summary: "Now you wait just a goddam minute, you're French?"

I am so behind on updating, particularly since I've been binging on Mass Effect and BBC Sherlock fic like I haven't in months. Because I'm too busy reading Sherlock fic to actually write up a recommendation, here's a short, quiet story from the kink meme about the Normandy making a brief stop on Earth. Despite the prompt, it's not particularly humorous and has little to do with Shepard being French; what it does have is a well-defined Shepard voice, a shift as Garrus and Shepard continue to find their way from friendship to something more, and The Adventures of Chakwas and Garrus (which I would read forever and ever, amen and lol).

Title: Sustain (or Concerto for the Famished in D Minor)
Authors: MaybeAmanda and OneMillionAndNine
Pairing: Sherlock/Molly
Length: 76k
Summary: "So now you're behaving like a six year old 'cause he didn't take you along on his honeymoon?" Lestrade said. "Grow the hell up."

Yes, it's het. Yes, it's babyfic. Yes, it's a story that you will devour in one evening. This story is complete and total indulgence, but it's polished, well-written indulgence that never goes easy on Sherlock. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the authors will decide to write a sequel, although the story stands perfectly on its own - it's just that this is the kind of story you want to bury yourself in. Has kind of an old-school feel to it, but it's a good read, an even better re-read, and I guarantee it'll whet your thirst for Sherlock/Molly, of which there is tragically little.
