Title: that boy is a monster
Author: Randstad
Characters: Hannibal/Beverly, implied Hannibal/Will
Length: 3k
Summary: Beverly doesn't see the harm in a night in with Dr. Lecter. (To Will's chagrin, neither does Dr. Lecter.)

You know how sometimes you come across a story that is so perfectly original and understated and awesome that you can't even hold on to your envy? That is this story. Although (shadow of Clarice Starling aside) Bev and Hannibal are my two favorite characters on the show, it never would've occurred to me to throw them together at all, much less in this way. A deft fic that manages to be hilarious without losing realism or the undercurrent of horror.

Title: DILF
Author: [personal profile] twentysomething
Pairing: Derek/Stiles
Length: 31k
Summary: "Today is Scott's first day of kindergarten and Derek is terrified."

I promise not to inflict too many Teen Wolf recs on my admittedly small (but wonderful!) audience, but this one is too delightful not to share. I think it's easily readable even if you haven't seen TW, as it's an AU that reads more like a well-plotted gay romance novella than anything involving werewolves. Lovely slow build and lovely banter from one of my favorite authors; if you're looking for a lighthearted escape, this fits to the letter.

Title: A Summer Day So Late in Coming
Author: helens78
Pairing: Charles/Erik
Length: 3k
Summary: Fifty years after they fell in love, Erik comes to Charles with a proposal that rocks Charles's world.

Probably the most perfect wedding story you will ever read. It is late and I am undelirious and at the end of this I made embarrassing squealing noises and then immediately re-read the entire thing. Everything about this is beautiful. It's also one of the few stories I've read that feels like it believably bridges the gap between First Class and the first movie trilogy.

Characters: Raven, Charles/Erik
Length: 13k
Summary: N/A

Exquisitely worded character study of Raven and, through her eyes, of Erik and Charles. I've been elbows-deep in the First Class fandom for the past few weeks, and this story struck me not only for its unflinching honesty but also for the way it elaborates on the relationship between Charles and Raven.

Title: Secondary Exposure
Author: [profile] thesardine
Pairing: Sherlock/John
Length: longish (I'd estimate about 15-20k, but my wordcount extension is still down)
Summary: Sherlock: "If you were dying, if you were murdered, in the very last seconds, what would you say?" / John: "Please God, let me live." / Sherlock: "Use your imagination." / John: "I don't have to."

And now for something completely different: "Secondary Exposure" tells the story of teenaged John's kidnapping and John and Sherlock's eventual encounter with the kidnapper. This is a rare delight in a fandom largely devoted to retelling the same sorts of stories; the author both manages to balance the unfolding case with a developing relationship and to refine and expose the characters in surprising ways. One of my favorites!

Author: [personal profile] rainjoyswriting
Characters: Kurt/Blaine, Santana
Length: ??? (mid-length oneshot)
Summary: "Seriously, don't mind me, you two keep going. But do you think you could lose the shirts?"

I discovered [profile] rainjoyous through her fantastic FMA fic (millions upon millions of words of the best Roy/Ed, do you know how happy I was), and she quickly became one of the few authors I bother to track. Sometime later she started writing Kurt/Blaine and EEEEEEEE I don't even have feelings~ about Kurt/Blaine but her Kurt/Blaine is so perfect that I am in love.

Really, thought, it's Santana who steals the show, which is how it should be. She's just. Her perspective and BEING FRIENDS WITH KURT, okay, how is this not the best.

Oh oh oh and while Santana's POV is used to great effect in illustrating the adorableness of Kurt/Blaine, this is her story. Santana is no mere plot device.

Title: Play to Win / A Game for Two Players
Author: [personal profile] lightgetsin
Characters: Roy/Ed, ensemble
Length: ~26,000 words
Summary: Ed loses his virginity, and then his inhibitions. Roy loses his mind. ["The Bastard is not in love with me, and I can prove it. With science!"]

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood has brought me more joy than I've found in anime in years (most don't even hold my attention past the first two episodes anymore, which means I rewatch Gundam Wing ceaselessly), and I was delighted to discover that not only is there a top-notch fandom but also that a great deal of the fic is housed on LiveJournal.

[personal profile] lightgetsin writes a fantastic Roy and an even better Ed; the sequel, from Ed's point of view, snaps and sparkles along effortlessly. It's the way the author captures how Ed thinks that raises this above the level of mere comedic romance.

Title: Scenes from a Lesser War
Author: Amireal
Characters: John Sheppard/Rodney McKay
Length: 20k
Summary: This. This was something that needed taking care of. In a non-traditional sense.

As I tear through the SGA fandom, I promised myself I wouldn't flood this community with recs (because anything worth recommending in SGA has probably been recommended twice already)...but, yeah, that didn't last.

"Scenes from a Lesser War" is one of those stories that I just - didn't want to end. The story deals with the repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell and its aftermath on Atlantis, which was not a trope I even knew I had a kink for until I was halfway through the fic. It combines the secret relationship, the we-can't-but-we-are, and the delicious, delicious reveal and oh, I could keep reading about this portrayal of the characters as they struggle with this issue eternally, but the ending is satisfying and so deserved.

Title: So Wise We Grow
Author: [profile] captanddeastar
Characters: Kirk/Spock, ensemble
Length: ~81,000 words
Summary: “Commander Spock, we have located your son,” the Vulcan lady on the screen says, which would be great, except Jim can tell by the look on Spock’s face that he’s never heard of this kid before in his life. “If it is expedient, the child will be sent to join you on the Enterprise within the week.”

This story. THIS STORY. I came across it after reading a Kirk+Uhura story by the same author (How Many Roads? or, 27 Times Jim Kirk Hit On Nyota Uhura, which deserves a rec of its own; I have been craving Kirk/Uhura in a bad way lately, apparently because canon pairings only hold my interest for so long), and let me tell you that I have not been this glued to a computer screen since my last reread of "Blind Sight."

I started composing my rec around part four of twelve, and something like a third of my scribbles have to do with how much I love the characterization, particularly of the secondary characters. The author's Pike? I want to marry him. Her Gaila? Ditto. (Her Bones I just want to take home and pet and feed and soothe.) The roundness of the people in this fic is incredible, and that goes double for the OC - by the time he arrived on the ship, I was already halfway in love. So often OCs, particularly children OCs, are mishandled or just poorly written, but Storek adds to the story rather than distracting from it.

Most importantly: this is reboot Kirk/Spock the way I desperately want it written, just starting to figure out their relationship when they're thrust headlong into the thick of things. The chess games, the mind melds, the banter - all the traditional elements are note-perfect, but the way their gradual realization is handled feels fresh and inspired.

I did pick out a couple of grammatical errors, but nothing that interrupted the flow of the story. Even if you aren't a fan of kidfic, give this one a try; I don't think you'll regret it. :)

Title: My Mouth Is Open, I See with My Eyes
Author: [profile] smilingskull
Characters: Teddy/Billy, Tony/Steve, Kate Bishop, Shannon Carter, Sharon Carter
Length: ~13,700 words
Summary: N/A

This story stays with you. It certainly stayed with me; I read it twice, stupidly forgot to bookmark it, and spent the better part of last night trying to track it down with me. The sheer scope, the way the characters wind in and out of each other's lives, the bittersweet hopefulness of this particular future - God, it kills me.

Thinky thoughts aside, there is SO MUCH that makes me flail in this. Let's start with the fact that it has a metric ton of both Kate Bishop and American Dream (Shannon! In 616!), and move right to the featuring of both Tony/Steve and Billy/Teddy. Bejeebus. I mean, the parallels it draws between the four, and the way Tony reacts every goddamn time he sees Teddy and Billy - I should probably warn that this was written way back when Steve was still totally 100% dead and he remains dead for the entire story - and. just. Holy crap, this story is amazing. Tony's at the emotional core, which is a thing I always appreciate, and the way Tony grows and he just, he feels older and tired and maybe a touch wiser and a shitload sadder, and his relationship with Shannon, and the way Steve and Shannon shape his relationship with Sharon - (I sometimes think of this as the story where Tony and Sharon raise Steve's kid.)

I get chills when the new-New old-Young Avengers are standing up there in front of press and Shannon says, "Avengers Assemble!" Which, I think, says a lot about the quality of storytelling, and good lord it is quality.

Length: 7,352 words
Summary: There are 3058 miles between them, and Teddy can feel every one.

THIS IS BILLY AND TEDDY BEING ADORABLE, OKAY, AND I DON'T HAVE A BETTER REC THAN THAT. They are being adorable at college, though (which Teddy describes as a "mandatory team project"), and with a single line this story made me love Cassie about six thousand times more than I did previously, what with being so caught up in fangirling Kate (and my reaction to Kate in this story: EEEEEEEEE). To summarize, Teddy and Billy are adorable and I now want to go re-read every YA appearance ever.

Title: War, Family, and the Lost Art of Conversation
Author: [personal profile] nightwalker
Characters: Jake/Marco, Rachel/Tobias
Length: 2,532 words
Summary: Family Dinner Night at Rachel's. Marco stresses, Jake stresses, Rachel runs roughshod over the masses and Tobias tries to assassinate a bottle of Coke.

I have really weirdly specific requirements for an Animorphs story to make my "highly reccable" list, and I completely blame it on this story. For years and years I didn't go looking for Animorphs fic, partly because I was so hung up on the series - seriously, I started reading Animorphs when #2 came out because the cat on the cover caught my eye, and for eight years straight there was nothing in life I revered more than Animorphs, and let me tell you something: nine-year-old-me was a canon Nazi.

Anyway. This story. The thing is, I tend to get really impatient with Cassie; I don't dislike her, she's just not a relatable to me as Jake or Marco or even Tobias. Somehow along the way I slipped into shipping Jake/Marco, which dovetails nicely with Rachel/Tobias (CAN YOU SAY OTP), and augh this story is perfect post-war Rachel-survives fic with Marco and Tobias bonding. I didn't even know I needed Marco + Tobias bonding until I read this story, but I really, really do, and just. Guh.

(That rambled even more than usual. Take it as a sign of how much I adore this story, please?)

Title: And I Have Asked to Be Where No Storms Come
Author: [profile] candle_beck
Characters: Sam/Dean, John
Length: 16k
Summary: Family is the first to break your heart.

Hands-down the single most compelling and thought-provoking of portrait of the Winchesters I've read. The author does an incredible job of writing not only Sam, Dean, and John as individuals, but also the family dynamics between the three. John in this - the way he views his boys, the way he constantly asks himself what Mary would have thought - just about breaks me, and the whole story is made a little more heartwrenching when you know what's coming after Sam graduates. Really solid writing, too - thoughtful, evocative, and not rushed in the least.

Title: Hanging Work
Author: [personal profile] cereta
Characters: Bruce Wayne/Dick Grayson, Selina Kyle
Length: 20k+
Summary: Two tickets to a circus never used, a little boy forgotten, and a chance meeting. Of such things are legends made.

Such a great premise for an AU - what if Selina, rather than Bruce, had taken the young Dick Grayson as a protege? - and it always leaves me craving more Dick&Selina interaction. Cereta is one of my favorite Batman authors, and this is probably my top pick of her stories; the characterization is fantastic, and Dick's evolution from a street kid to an adult seem so natural.

It's the relationship between Bruce and Dick that really makes me *flail* though, because it is just amazingly perfect, the way Bruce watches over Dick, the way Selina taunts Bruce with Dick's report cards, the way Bruce and Dick finally find themselves falling back into their proper roles...I would also seriously love some art of Dick's costume from the end of the story, just sayin'.

Length: 2015 words
Summary: "Yes, well...I could make fun of the striptease you did, if you'd like." Watari offered, smiling a little as he stared at his hands resting on the table. "Or the very romantic serenade afterwards."

Yami no Matsuei is a fandom I found by way of X/1999, and it's one of only a handful of manga fandoms I still follow on a regular basis. Tatsumi is far and away my favorite character, and although Tatsumi/Tsuzuki is my pairing of choice, I find that I enjoy Tatsumi/Watari more and more as time passes. This quietly delightful story shows exactly why; it's just a short domestic moment between Watari and Tatsumi, but eee(!) the moment is just so perfect, with how Watari teases Tatsumi and at the same time they have this very adult, very understanding friendship on the verge of something more.

I came across "Your Fixed Point" via a rec on [community profile] crack_van, and let me say first that it is completely not what I expected. Title: The incestuous courtship of the antichrist's bride
Author: [profile] fleshflutter
Pairing: Sam/Dean
Length: 48,000 words
Summary: Sam is trying to become the Antichrist in order to save the world. He has a small army of angels and demons, he has an adoring cult, he has a work of prophecy by Jack Kerouac, and he has Dean. Things are going pretty well until he accidentally signs Dean up as his Beloved Consort, a role that requires sex with the Antichrist on an altar. And that's when things stop going pretty well. Also, the soundtrack to the Apocalypse sucks.

Probably my favorite Sam/Dean story, because if you asked me to name a more favoriter Wincest fic, I could not do it. What does this story have? What does it not have? Crack, drama, crack, incest, crack, bids for the throne of hell, really scorching hot sex, crack, humor, crazy and awesome references to that hack Jack Kerouac, crack, and sex that is no really so scorching hot the author might be obligated to furnish you with sunglasses.

(Also highly recommended: the podfic recording by [personal profile] fayjay, well worth the five hour length - and I say that as a person with little patience for listening to lengthier stories.)

Pairing: Arthur/Eames, Mal/Dom
Length: 70,000 words
Summary: Or, "on the tip of the tongue." Arthur meets Mal first. He inherits Dom, after. Everything else is on him.

I haven't been reading a terrible lot in Inception, but [personal profile] rageprufrock is one of those rare fanwriters who transcends fandoms. When this story turned up on my reading page, I knew I'd be in for an intricately-plotted, skilfully-written story than didn't pander to the reader by offering huge swaths of unnecessary exposition, but I was unaware that the story would be the definitive story for my personal canon, even over the film. I doubt the filmmakers themselves had such a richly textured backstory for Arthur - and this is undoubtedly Arthur's story first and foremost. The focus is as much on his friendships with Mal and Cobb as his blossoming relationship with Eames, although slashers won't walk away unsatisfied, and there are so many lovely conceptual bits about PASIV and lucid dreaming. Highly recommended.
