Title: Heart over Mind
Author: Regann
Characters: Hermione/Snape
Length: 186k
Summary: Something odd about Hermione causes her to have unexpected reaction to a love potion. Only it's one which no one expected. How could a lack of reaction cause so much trouble? AU to Books 5 and 6.

So this is a story you will enjoy only if you are a very specific type of person, and that type is limited to readers who like Snape/Hermione and don't mind stories that bear little relation to canon. That said, this was an absolutely lovely indulgence that I devoured over the course of a weekend. In the best tradition of the genre, it emphasizes intellectual compatibility and includes a lengthy correspondence between Hermione and her former teacher, thoughtful exploration of magical traditions from other cultures, plenty of emphasis on Hermione's goals and character, and a fanon Snape that fortunately stays on the tolerable side of the absurd. It's an old-school het epic in its natural habitat, and you can't beat that for a good time.

Title: Each In Its Own Way
Author: ishie
Characters: Ann/Joe
Length: 3k
Rating: G
Summary: Maybe derailed trains and bar brawls weren't the most glamourous of subjects to cover, but Joe Bradley was back in New York at last.

I volunteered to beta this story for [personal profile] ishie despite never having seen Roman Holiday, fell in love with the characters, ran off to watch the movie, and was so desperate for exactly this follow-up that I re-read the story immediately afterward. The atmosphere is perfect, carrying the champagne mood of the source material over to 1950s Brooklyn without missing a note, and there's this sort of rolling rhythm to the writing that imitates the original script and particularly comes through in the excellent dialogue. Seriously, it's a fantastic reunion piece, one of those stories that just makes me happy!

Title: that boy is a monster
Author: Randstad
Characters: Hannibal/Beverly, implied Hannibal/Will
Length: 3k
Summary: Beverly doesn't see the harm in a night in with Dr. Lecter. (To Will's chagrin, neither does Dr. Lecter.)

You know how sometimes you come across a story that is so perfectly original and understated and awesome that you can't even hold on to your envy? That is this story. Although (shadow of Clarice Starling aside) Bev and Hannibal are my two favorite characters on the show, it never would've occurred to me to throw them together at all, much less in this way. A deft fic that manages to be hilarious without losing realism or the undercurrent of horror.

Title: Sustain II - Refrain
Authors: MaybeAmanda & Onemillionnine
Characters: Sherlock/Molly, Sarah/John
Length: WIP
Summary: He could fix this.

Part of me thinks I might be premature in recommending this, since only the first of three parts has been posted, but then I remember that I've read chapter one six times daily since it was posted and I think: NOPE.

The strange thing about Sherlock/Molly is that it isn't a ship I would ever want to become canon, but 'Sustain' is such a rounded universe and it treats the individual characters with such respect that I reread the story six times daily. But seriously, the characterization is so revealing and if that isn't enough for you: Molly, and if that still isn't enough for you: Sherlock having a staring contest with his baby.

Characters: Wash/Zoe
Summary: My love, though silly, is more brave.

I don't usually go looking for Firefly fic, but this story found me, wrapped its metaphorical arms around my virtual body, and cradled me to its breastbone as it sang soft lullabies in my ear. Which is to say, this is my Zoe/Wash headcanon.

Title: Sustain (or Concerto for the Famished in D Minor)
Authors: MaybeAmanda and OneMillionAndNine
Pairing: Sherlock/Molly
Length: 76k
Summary: "So now you're behaving like a six year old 'cause he didn't take you along on his honeymoon?" Lestrade said. "Grow the hell up."

Yes, it's het. Yes, it's babyfic. Yes, it's a story that you will devour in one evening. This story is complete and total indulgence, but it's polished, well-written indulgence that never goes easy on Sherlock. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the authors will decide to write a sequel, although the story stands perfectly on its own - it's just that this is the kind of story you want to bury yourself in. Has kind of an old-school feel to it, but it's a good read, an even better re-read, and I guarantee it'll whet your thirst for Sherlock/Molly, of which there is tragically little.

Title: Haunted
Author: Ugly-Girl
Characters: Diana/Bruce
Length: 39k
Summary: When Batman won't save himself, Diana decides to take matters into her own hands.

So somehow in the past week I was bitten hard by the Wonder Woman bug, and now all I want to do is think about Diana and read about Diana and flail about Diana and stare at pictures of Diana. Since Bruce/Diana is basically the best ship in the DCU that doesn't involve Lois Lane, Batman gets dragged along on my Wonder Woman binge.

Fortunately, there are plenty of B/D stories set in the animated universe. This particular story is lengthy enough to satisfy; the plot leans heavily on the supernatural, which throws Bruce out of his comfort zone, but the story is really about the give and take between two hardheaded people who insist on saving one another. There were a couple of moments where Diana's characterization made me scratch my head, but her voice is so delightfully fresh that those moments were hardly worth noticing.

Title: Rollercoaster
Author: Mistress Scribbles
Characters: Data/Yar, ensemble
Length: 210k
Summary: Fate conspired differently. Death passed Tasha by. Given the time to evolve, a relationship she'd dismissed as a one night stand became the most complicated love affair she'd know. Series of stories spanning the show & movies.

So I've been looking for this story for maybe two decades. At least since I met the internet.

It is everything that I wanted it to be.

I laughed, I cried, I had to physically remove myself from the computer at least twice so I'd stop frightening my cat with involuntary dolphin noises. The first story spans "Encounter at Farpoint" through Star Trek: Nemesis; the sequel spins off in a non-canonical direction; EVERYTHING IS DATA AND NOTHING HURTS. Seriously, I don't think I even legally have the time to be this excited about fanfiction.

Title: Snapshot
Author: [profile] crimsonclad
Pairing: Logan/Veronica
Rating: R for adorable
Length: oneshot
Summary: N/A ("nice, happy, goofy and domestic Logan/Veronica")

I have a serious weakness for curtain fic, especially in canon that seems determined to give me anything but. This is seriously adorable, with banter! and Target! and absolutely no heart-wrenching conflict. The frame hits another of my narrative kinks, the outside/media POV, and even though he isn't quite, I love Logan as a nearly-a-trophy husband.

Also, adorable. Really adorable. Did I mention that this story is adorable?

Title: Liquid Courage
Author: littleblackdog
Characters: Varric/F!Hawke
Length: 12,689 words
Summary: Now he was being pawed at by a very drunk, very handsy, very heavy mage. Not that he'd ever call Hawke heavy to her face, or anywhere she might hear him, or out loud ever. It was... an unconventional sort of courtship.

This story should come with a warning, and that warning should be that it is guaranteed to make you regret that Varric wasn't included as a LI in-game. It was, iirc, originally written for the Dragon Age Kink Meme (a treasure amongst kink memes), and it manages to be sexy and also adorable, as in kitten levels of adorable. I always love it when a story plays up Varric's skill and passion for storytelling, and the fourth part does satisfy - it's one of those stories that just keeps climbing until the end note is the highest. (Did that make sense? I don't think that made sense, but the story is lovely).

Title: Happily Ever After With Goats
Author: estuesday
Characters: Hawke/Varric, ensemble
Length: 6,068 words
Summary: The tale Varric told the Seekers wasn't the end of their story. From Orlais to Antiva, the high seas to an isolated farm, Hawke has a long way left to go. One can only hope the goats survive her passage. Hawke/Varric, past Hawke/Anders and Hawke/Fenris.

This is an excellent continuation of the game that includes a nod to the canonical romances while still managing to work Varric into the picture, for which I say: sweet Jesus thank you.

Title: What We Become
Author: Crisium
Characters: Amell/Cullen
Length: 145k
Summary: Cullen/Amell, post-game.

This is actually a story in a much longer series (What We Become, 293,000 words and counting), and my reaction is probably best summarized by reprinting a remark I made to computer somewhere around chapter six: "Alistair, you need to leave now so I can stop pining and enjoy this lovely other romance that does not involve you."

Excellent worldbuilding without any tedious information dumps, and even the supporting cast is rounded and dynamic; most importantly, the Warden reads like a game character rather than the author's self-insert. The Templar/Mage romance is written so that it hits all the right tropes (pining, forbidden relationships) without ever descending into melodrama. Also: Alistair.

Title: Ice in Crystal
Author: [profile] juliefortune
Characters: Ensemble, with Mal/Inara and Wash/Zoe
Length: 14k
Warnings: Non-con, violence
Summary: N/A

This story riffs on an unwritten episode plot hinted at by Tim Minear: What if Inara had been captured and raped by Reavers? While the story doesn't have what I'd call graphic portrayed violence, it is nonetheless as deeply unsettling as you'd expect. The character studies are brilliant, though - the dynamic between Zoe and Inara in particular.

Title: Dig Your Own Hole
Author: vinylroad
Characters: Katherine/Damon
Length: 4400 words
Summary: In so many ways, Damon is nothing like his brother. There's a hole deep inside of him that Katherine can feel in her blood, an emptiness she feels echoed in herself, something waiting to be filled. Wanting to be filled. His smiles are sharp, hiding nothing from her, all his emotions at play on his face, his happiness and sorrow so present it's as if she can touch it when he lets her fingers fall to his face. He kisses her hand as politely as his brother, but there's something dark there too, a craving that feels familiar and safe.

Really excellent Katherine perspective on her life and her relationship with Damon. Neither of these characters are cut out for happy endings, but this piece reads as reflective rather than dark. Katherine's thoughts on the differences and similarities between the Salvatore brothers are particularly apt; this is Katherine's story, though, rather than having a focus on shipping.

Title: The Mutant Problem
Author: [profile] xenokattz
Characters: Peter Parker, various mutants, background Peter/MJ (movieverse)
Length: Medium (7900+ words plus a heapload of pictures)
Summary: A week after Black Tuesday's telepathic attack on the world, Peter Parker took some pictures for a story on "the mutant problem." Ten years later, he's still taking pictures. The only difference is his definition of "the problem."

This story is essentially a mock-up of a photoessay done for the New York Times by Peter Parker on mutants. The first line of the article reads "You know that television show, Big Bang Theory where all the geeks live in one floor of a college dorm?" (Which is not exactly accurate, but: *FLAILS*) The Peter voice is perfect, and the sweet background Peter/MJ moments are perfect, but even more this story actually makes you think about what life would be like for mutants if they really existed. There are all these ground-level snapshots of human beings and how they reflect on and interact with the larger world, and the photographs are just perfect and everything about this is perfect. I think I feel a little bit in love with Rogue and Wanda, not that I needed any help there, and let me say it again: PERFECT.

Title: The Ringmaster in a Blue Tux, and the Girl with Really Strong Toes
Author: [profile] humansrsuperior
Characters: Ten/Rose, Jack, Donna, ensemble
Length: 11,237 words
Summary: The day Rose Tyler joined the traveling circus with the big blue tent, she was first greeted by an elephant.

There's a sad lack of alternate universe (or "alternate reality," which I think is more accurate) fic in the Doctor/Rose world; I can understand why, but that lack makes stumbling across a piece like this all the more delightful. The two words that come to mind are "whimsical" and "charming" - there's very much a fairy-tale feel to the story - but at the same time the characters are so recognizably themselves that there's not the sense of distance, of disengagement, that one usually feels in fairy-tales.

Title: Escape Artistry
Author: David Hines
Characters: Bruce/Diana
Length: 26,256 words
Summary: Wonder Woman is eager to learn new things. Batman, less so. Primarily JL animated continuity; some comic elements from as far back as the Golden Age.

This story is smart. The writing, the plotting, and the characterization are remarkably - I hate to say professional, but definitely polished. I have a difficult time finding Bruce/Diana fic I really enjoy, partly because there isn't a lot of it and partly because it often comes with a side of Clark/Diana, which is not so much my cup of tea. (That's actually less because of my crazy shipper tendencies and more because I enjoy Superman and Wonder Woman's platonic, comrades-in-arms dynamic; it seems like something both of them need.)

The very best aspect of this fic is that that it solves the problem of Diana losing her powers when she's bound by having Bruce teach her - like the title says - escape artistry. It's such a brilliant take, almost subversive, and I wonder that it hasn't been done before. (Has it? Maybe it has and I'm just not as up on WW continuity as I ought to be. One more thing for my list!) There is powerplay, but not what you'd expect in a story about Diana being tied up, and the ending broke me, as it will you.

Title: Eventually, You'll Know I Love You
Author: [profile] humansrsuperior
Characters: Ten/Rose, Ten II/Rose, Jack, Mickey, Pete, Jackie, Jake
Length: 40,000+ words
Summary: Disaster hits Torchwood in Pete's World, and at the same, familiar faces have been pulled through from another universe.

My feelings on Ten II tend to range wildly from total denial to complete embrasure, but for the most part I prefer to read happy!Ten stories and avoid the possible angst all together. This story? I knew that this story was going to hurt, and I read it anyway, because it is just that good. (Never fear, though, it meets the happy ending criterion!) I mean, this story ripped my heart out and fed it back to me and I enjoyed the eating of it, that is how much I loved this. I'm always interested in post-JE fic that tries to sort out the Ten/Ten II dilemma, and this is brilliantly executed, giving both Doctors their due. Also, it has Jackie and the Doctor interacting, which is pretty much the only impetus I need to read a story.
