Title: A Threat Disguised as a Suggestion
Author: mirandu
Characters: Clarice Starling, Hannibal Lecter
Length: 2k
Summary: Playing with/mixing canons between the Hannibal TV series and the novels/movies. One interpretation of how the first meeting between Dr. Lecter and the FBI trainee Clarice Starling might go, with the added history of Miriam Lass between them. (Some brief mentions of violence -- and, uh, cannibalism obviously -- but nothing too graphic in here.)

Absolutely brilliant recreation of Lecter and Starling's first meeting tailored for the NBC universe. I've stumbled across some show!verse stories that don't do justice to Starling's character, but here she's the perfect balance of novice and determinator. The Lecter POV also blends art and brutality in just the right measures without veering into overly lurid writing.

Title: Allegiance
Authors: Bookwrm389
Characters: Team Mustang (with Roy/Riza)
Length: 94k
Summary: When the Eastern Rebellion came to an end, one man looked on his comrades with the eyes of a king. One by one, we became his soldiers and he became our leader. We are Colonel Roy Mustang's most loyal subordinates, and these are our stories.

Really fantastic story that takes the time to examine each of Roy's subordinates in context of their relationship with him. The writing could use a little polishing in places, but overall that's a minor flaw in the face of how encompassing and thoughtful each chapter is. I love how Roy's layers are peeled back gradually, but while he is the center of the piece, the rest of the characters are given just as much room to speak and grow. I found myself particularly enjoying Breda and his interactions with Havoc.

Riza's chapter is pretty heavy on the Royai, as is the epilogue, but the other parts are more subtle on the shippy moments. Should be enjoyable for anyone who prefers gen, too.

Title: Dust in the Wind
Author: [profile] lyra_wing
Characters: Dean, Sam
Length: ??? (oneshot)
Summary: Future fic. Erm. Hard to explain. This is a crossover with American Gods, but you don't need to read that to understand what's going on.

An absolutely brilliant expansion of Neil Gaiman's American Gods, as lyrical and exact as if he'd written it himself. This is actually the ending to SPN I think fandom yearns for - Sam and Dean riding off into the sunset, chasing after always one more hunt.

Title: Moving Forward
Author: YappiChick
Characters: Cortana, John-117
Length: 1k
Summary: He raised his right eyebrow, as though he was surprised by her coyness. “You know why I requested this assignment, Cortana,” he chided softly, turning back to face her.

My third Yuletide gift! This one's an absolutely delightful moment-in-time fic set some time after Halo 3 and loosely based on Bungie's holiday greeting card. Focuses on the relationship between Cortana and the Master Chief, with hints at something deeper than friendship, although nothing more than the games suggest.

Title: Once and Future Heroes
Author: Selkit
Characters: Normandy crew ensemble
Length: 6.5k
Summary: Even those who will one day achieve greatness have hopes, dreams, disappointments, and moments of normalcy along the way--at least, as normal as is possible for this bunch. A collection of glimpses at the lives of Shepard and her squadmates before they became galactic heroes.

Equally gorgeous as my other gift from the talented Selkit! This one is a series of vignettes that follow the main cast prior to the events of the first game. The scenes really run the gamut on emotion (although, probably fittingly, Shepard's bit is the one that has really seized hold of me and nestled into my personal canon; Selkit writes a wonderful f!Shepard). Overall, it's just such a lovely, thoughtful story that I want to read it over and over. Definitely will be in my head the next time I play Mass Effect.

Title: oh lady, be good
Author: dress without sleeves
Characters: Dean, Sam, John (gen)
Length: 10k
Summary: Deanna Winchester, from ages four to twenty-six. A look at the relationships on Supernatural if John Winchester's first born had been a girl.

Supernatural is was not my show. I'd seen enough episodes (and read enough at [community profile] fandomsecrets) to know the characters, and I had the impression that solid female presences on the show are lacking. I was intrigued enough by the premise of the story to click anyway, mostly because I'm a huge fan of the genderflip thing (you know, always-a-girl!fic).

The writing here does not disappoint. Although I'm not terribly familiar with the characters, I had such a rounded grasp on their personalities from less than ten thousand words. The way Deanna's life is different from Dean's and the many ways her life are the same are not the whole point of the fic, either. Crisp and thoughtful with a satisfying pay-off.

Title: Happy Families Are All Alike
Author: [personal profile] ayalesca
Characters: McCoy (gen)
Length: 2,294 words
Summary: How Leonard McCoy was brought up to be such a fucking piece of work.

I adore this story; the blending of the new timeline with the old is exactly the sort of thing that makes me flail inarticulately. Although I'm at the point where most second-person stories simply frustrate me, the storytelling here is so superb and smooth that the unusual POV didn't detract in the least. Absolutely heartbreaking.

Title: The Mutant Problem
Author: [profile] xenokattz
Characters: Peter Parker, various mutants, background Peter/MJ (movieverse)
Length: Medium (7900+ words plus a heapload of pictures)
Summary: A week after Black Tuesday's telepathic attack on the world, Peter Parker took some pictures for a story on "the mutant problem." Ten years later, he's still taking pictures. The only difference is his definition of "the problem."

This story is essentially a mock-up of a photoessay done for the New York Times by Peter Parker on mutants. The first line of the article reads "You know that television show, Big Bang Theory where all the geeks live in one floor of a college dorm?" (Which is not exactly accurate, but: *FLAILS*) The Peter voice is perfect, and the sweet background Peter/MJ moments are perfect, but even more this story actually makes you think about what life would be like for mutants if they really existed. There are all these ground-level snapshots of human beings and how they reflect on and interact with the larger world, and the photographs are just perfect and everything about this is perfect. I think I feel a little bit in love with Rogue and Wanda, not that I needed any help there, and let me say it again: PERFECT.

Title: Help Wanted
Author: Iambic
Characters: Steve, Tony, Thor, Jan (Marvel Adventures)
Length: 3,290 words
Summary: In which the Avengers go scouting for members, Steve stops worrying and learns to love the 21st century, and some people just aren't team players.

Marvel Adventures is a line that never fails to delight me, since it's eight parts love and ten parts happy-fun-adventuresomeness and three parts crack; additionally it has Tony and Steve playing basketball together, which is almost everything I can ask from a comic book. I was beyond delighted when this story popped up on someone's Yuletide reclist (thank you, kind person!).

Everything I adore about the comics is here in spades. By the time I hit the line "He looks like a god, because he is one. And like a god, he needs no caffeine to start his day," I was completely and totally won over by the charm this thing plastered all over my screen. It has caffiene-addict!Tony, and Thor and Steve bonding over their confusion about modern life, and Hank and Jan being fluffy, and Thor and Storm flirting (which I secretly also adore! if for no other reason than THEY BOTH HAVE STORM-BASED POWERS, OKAY), and repeated references to a similarly competent but younger and more sociable version of Daredevil. AND THOR IN THIS. I found myself loving Thor more and more with every paragraph. ♥

Title: The Terror from Bohemia: Being the Reminiscences of John H. Watson, M.D., in the Year of the Old Ones 745
Author: Satchelfoot
Characters: Holmes, Watson, Irene Adler
Length: 1,983 words
Summary: Holmes and Watson, having escaped to the rookery of St. Giles, meet a mysterious woman who also has a talent for killing royalty.

For those of you not in the know, A Study in Emerald is a story by Neil Gaiman that combines Sherlock Holmes with H.P. Lovecraft's mythos in a way that will blow your mind. It is my very favorite short fiction piece, which is no small feat considering the number of short stories Neil himself has written, not to mention all the other authors I adore. *g*

Anyway! Forty billion gold stars to whichever brilliant person thought to request fic for this fandom, and another forty billion to the author for such a detailed and fitting execution. The Watson voice in this is downright superb, possibly even more Doyle-like than Gaiman's story (although I won't spoil the surprise by saying why). I don't think you need to be familiar with Lovecraft to read either this or the original piece; a little application of google-fu should tell you all you need to know.

Length: I WOULD KNOW THAT IF MY FIREFOX WORDCOUNT EXTENSION STILL WORKED. But probably medium-ish.
Summary: N/A

I've had the worst craving for Torchwood crack lately (blame [personal profile] southern_heaven), and the author I go to for all Torchwood fic is [personal profile] copperbadge. Title: One Continuous Singular Incident in the Life of Faith Lehane
Author: [personal profile] ariafic
Characters: Ten, Faith (gen)
Length: 4,154 words
Summary: Faith could do with a vacation. The Doctor provides.

Stories like this are part of the reason I love fandom so much. I initially followed a link simply because of the novelty of two of my favorite characters! interacting!, and discovering such a solidly-written Faith was an unexpected delight. This fic, though, is so much more than just a gimmick; Faith and the Doctor find something in one another that they've both been desperately needing, and their personalities click in a way I wasn't at all expecting.

Fits in Who canon after S4 and Buffy canon after S7. Vampires existing in the Whoniverse makes perfect sense, am I right?

Title: Untitled
Author: [personal profile] stoney321
Characters: Pam, Edward
Length: ~4200 words
Summary: N/A

I can't think of two fandoms further apart on the spectrum of hard crack than Twilight and True Blood, and this story mines the differences between them HILARIOUSLY. Edward sends Fangtasia a missionary-style letter, and Pam writes back in true Pam-fashion. I wouldn't recommend reading this if you can't take religious spoofs, but in the same vein you'll probably enjoy it more if you have some experience with evangelical practices. But seriously:

Greetings and Felicitations, Fellow Vampires,

I am Edward Cullen, my family and I hail from Forks, Washington, currently. As we tend to stay together [outings, family meals, board games, clothes shopping, craft times] we didn't realize that the outside world had organized in such a manner as to have Kingdoms! Interesting. Do you not pay any form of allegiance to the Volturri? I'll have to consult with our patriarch on these new and exciting developments in our world. We believe that we should honor the laws of the country to which we claim citizenship, even though we also believe in a higher law, of which I am about to explain.

BRILLIANT.

Title: What More
Author: daymarket
Characters: Marco, Rachel (gen)
Length: 1,247 words
Summary: Marco has a question. Rachel has an answer.

I'm not going to lie, I got completely distracted by the Animorphs section on AO3 and it was such a pleasant surprise to stumble across this gem. It isn't terribly long, but the banter between Rachel and Marco is laugh-out-loud funny, and I got warm fuzzies from thinking about Marco and his parents. I've always had a yen for fic about the time period when the Animorphs and their families were living in the Hork-Bajir Valley; this hits that spot without being too over-the-top in any direction but awesome.

Characters: Ensemble (Ted, Robin, Barney, Lily/Marshall)
Length: 2,755 words
Summary: Zombies are attacking NYC. Luckily, Robin knows what to do.

Crack and zombies, what more do you want? This is wonderfully in-character and taken in just the perfect direction for the fandom, that is, lots of bonding and Barney using the apocalypse as an excuse to nail random women and Robin taking everyone up on the roof to teach them to shoot. The future!Ted narration really worked for me, too; in some fic the device feels gimmicky or forced, but here it's used for fantastic effect.

Length: 7914 words
Summary: Several years post ROTJ, Lord Vader finds himself with a new role to fill--Grandpa. Extremely AU. If you've ever wanted to see Vader vs. Toddler, this is your story.

This story is almost sickeningly adorable and hilarious. It never quite crosses the line into revoltingly fluffy, though, and the humor is very well done. Title: Triumph of the Last Marauder
Author: [personal profile] mousapelli
Character: Harry
Length: 4k
Summary: N/A

I'm always hard-pressed to articulate what exactly I love so much about this story. I do love it - it's one of my very favorite HP fics - and the whole thing slots into canon and yet expands on it so perfectly. There's a fantastic sense of continuity with the past as Harry spends one summer rebuilding a Triumph motorcycle, and a real sense of depth to Harry's relationship with Remus, but the real triumph (ahaha) is Harry's characterization - stressed and grieving and still very clearly a teenage boy.
