Title: Redemption Road
Authors: The Redemption Team
Characters: Dean/Castiel, Sam, Bobby
Length: 652k
Summary: With Castiel having set himself up as the new God, drunk on power and volatile as a nuclear reactor, Dean, Sam, and Bobby find themselves on the run from the jealous, capricious monster wearing the face of their friend. Desperate for protection and wary of his brother’s mental state since Castiel unlocked Sam's memories of Hell, Dean knows Castiel must be defused before he can wreak further havoc in Heaven or on Earth. Forty-two parts and this still isn't long enough! Virtual season, well-plotted, decently written, and excellently characterized; I blew threw the whole thing in three days and then writhed on the floor, gnashing my teeth, rending my clothing, and wailing for more episodes. My absolute favorite thing is the Lovecraftian influence, but it's also worth noting that the series explores relationships other than Dean and Cas's, including Dean's time with Lisa. (I am always happy when Lisa isn't glossed over.) A+. Would read again.

Title: Dust in the Wind
Author: [profile] lyra_wing
Characters: Dean, Sam
Length: ??? (oneshot)
Summary: Future fic. Erm. Hard to explain. This is a crossover with American Gods, but you don't need to read that to understand what's going on.

An absolutely brilliant expansion of Neil Gaiman's American Gods, as lyrical and exact as if he'd written it himself. This is actually the ending to SPN I think fandom yearns for - Sam and Dean riding off into the sunset, chasing after always one more hunt.

Title: oh lady, be good
Author: dress without sleeves
Characters: Dean, Sam, John (gen)
Length: 10k
Summary: Deanna Winchester, from ages four to twenty-six. A look at the relationships on Supernatural if John Winchester's first born had been a girl.

Supernatural is was not my show. I'd seen enough episodes (and read enough at [community profile] fandomsecrets) to know the characters, and I had the impression that solid female presences on the show are lacking. I was intrigued enough by the premise of the story to click anyway, mostly because I'm a huge fan of the genderflip thing (you know, always-a-girl!fic).

The writing here does not disappoint. Although I'm not terribly familiar with the characters, I had such a rounded grasp on their personalities from less than ten thousand words. The way Deanna's life is different from Dean's and the many ways her life are the same are not the whole point of the fic, either. Crisp and thoughtful with a satisfying pay-off.

Title: Five Times Dean Failed, and One Time He Didn't Do Too Badly
Author: [personal profile] scaramouche
Characters: Dean/Cas, ensemble
Length: 5000+ words
Summary: University AU. Dean isn't as cool as he thinks he is.

I'm always on the prowl for a good Dean/Cas AU, but the fandom tends to produce very few of them, and fewer still do more than a decent job of porting Castiel's character to a less fantastic world. Never fear! for [personal profile] scaramouche handles the AU with the same panache as she does canon. Fair warning, you may find yourself stifling giggles through your fist.

Title: And I Have Asked to Be Where No Storms Come
Author: [profile] candle_beck
Characters: Sam/Dean, John
Length: 16k
Summary: Family is the first to break your heart.

Hands-down the single most compelling and thought-provoking of portrait of the Winchesters I've read. The author does an incredible job of writing not only Sam, Dean, and John as individuals, but also the family dynamics between the three. John in this - the way he views his boys, the way he constantly asks himself what Mary would have thought - just about breaks me, and the whole story is made a little more heartwrenching when you know what's coming after Sam graduates. Really solid writing, too - thoughtful, evocative, and not rushed in the least.

Title: Two Atheists in a Foxhole
Author: Nutkin
Characters: Dean/Castiel
Length: 9k
Summary: Dean and Castiel discuss whiskey, cheeseburgers and sex, and find some humanity along the way.

Much as I enjoy a good, fluffy Dean/Castiel romp, characterization - especially Castiel's - all too often falls to the sword in favor of a more indulgent plot. This is one of only a handful of stories I've come across that keeps Castiel consistent with the show, as hardened and experienced as any Winchester but still baffled by the human experience. It also reminds me of the early S5 Dean/Cas vibe, which: bonus!

Title: Conversational Winchester for Trolls
Author: [profile] eloise_bright
Characters: John, Dean, Sam
Length: 1850 words
Summary: N/A

“You are indeed the most emotionally fucked up Winchester of them all,” said the troll. “Come here and let me eat you.” This is some sort of masterful crack/angst/meta fusion. Words do not do it justice.

Title: When You're a Stranger
Author: [personal profile] glorious_spoon
Characters: Barnes/Damien, Dean/Castiel
Length: 8k+
Summary: After the convention, Barnes and Damien get themselves into trouble and end up learning more about hunting than they ever wanted to know. Damien POV.

This story actually centers around Barnes and Damien, the fannish couple who helped out Sam 'n' Dean in 5.09 "The Real Ghostbusters." It's a great glimpse into the lives of two of the show's minor characters and how the Winchesters might appear to ordinaries. (And using that word clues me in that I've been reading far too much Dark Angel fic, lol.) [livejournal.com profile] glorious_spoon is among my favorite unsung authors; her writing has a very different tenor than what you'd normally find in the fandom.

Title: The incestuous courtship of the antichrist's bride
Author: [profile] fleshflutter
Pairing: Sam/Dean
Length: 48,000 words
Summary: Sam is trying to become the Antichrist in order to save the world. He has a small army of angels and demons, he has an adoring cult, he has a work of prophecy by Jack Kerouac, and he has Dean. Things are going pretty well until he accidentally signs Dean up as his Beloved Consort, a role that requires sex with the Antichrist on an altar. And that's when things stop going pretty well. Also, the soundtrack to the Apocalypse sucks.

Probably my favorite Sam/Dean story, because if you asked me to name a more favoriter Wincest fic, I could not do it. What does this story have? What does it not have? Crack, drama, crack, incest, crack, bids for the throne of hell, really scorching hot sex, crack, humor, crazy and awesome references to that hack Jack Kerouac, crack, and sex that is no really so scorching hot the author might be obligated to furnish you with sunglasses.

(Also highly recommended: the podfic recording by [personal profile] fayjay, well worth the five hour length - and I say that as a person with little patience for listening to lengthier stories.)

Title: Fanmix Fic
Author: [personal profile] femmenerd
Pairing: Dean/Faith
Length: 15k
Summary: It’s been ninety-three days since Dean buried his father in Kansas soil when he first meets Faith.

Oh, this story shows exactly why Dean/Faith is my crossover pairing of choice. At first glance, it seems like the couple is basic purely on superficial similarities and that Dean and his gooey-on-the-inside couldn't go the distance with Faith's wild ways, but here the author writes two flawed people inextricably drawn together.
