Title: Whizbang and the Flyboy
Author: circ_bamboo
Characters: Carol/Rhodey, Tony/Pepper, ensemble
Length: 16k
Summary: When an eccentric billionaire genius drags Carol Danvers off to be a replacement bridesmaid for a photo shoot, she hopes it'll just be a couple hours of her time. But her partner for the shoot, the best man, is none other than the devastatingly-handsome Lieutenant Colonel James Rhodes. Will she be able to keep her hands--and her heart--to herself?

My verbatim reaction to this story was basically just enthusiastic yelling.

Title: Help Wanted
Author: Iambic
Characters: Steve, Tony, Thor, Jan (Marvel Adventures)
Length: 3,290 words
Summary: In which the Avengers go scouting for members, Steve stops worrying and learns to love the 21st century, and some people just aren't team players.

Marvel Adventures is a line that never fails to delight me, since it's eight parts love and ten parts happy-fun-adventuresomeness and three parts crack; additionally it has Tony and Steve playing basketball together, which is almost everything I can ask from a comic book. I was beyond delighted when this story popped up on someone's Yuletide reclist (thank you, kind person!).

Everything I adore about the comics is here in spades. By the time I hit the line "He looks like a god, because he is one. And like a god, he needs no caffeine to start his day," I was completely and totally won over by the charm this thing plastered all over my screen. It has caffiene-addict!Tony, and Thor and Steve bonding over their confusion about modern life, and Hank and Jan being fluffy, and Thor and Storm flirting (which I secretly also adore! if for no other reason than THEY BOTH HAVE STORM-BASED POWERS, OKAY), and repeated references to a similarly competent but younger and more sociable version of Daredevil. AND THOR IN THIS. I found myself loving Thor more and more with every paragraph. ♥

Title: My Mouth Is Open, I See with My Eyes
Author: [profile] smilingskull
Characters: Teddy/Billy, Tony/Steve, Kate Bishop, Shannon Carter, Sharon Carter
Length: ~13,700 words
Summary: N/A

This story stays with you. It certainly stayed with me; I read it twice, stupidly forgot to bookmark it, and spent the better part of last night trying to track it down with me. The sheer scope, the way the characters wind in and out of each other's lives, the bittersweet hopefulness of this particular future - God, it kills me.

Thinky thoughts aside, there is SO MUCH that makes me flail in this. Let's start with the fact that it has a metric ton of both Kate Bishop and American Dream (Shannon! In 616!), and move right to the featuring of both Tony/Steve and Billy/Teddy. Bejeebus. I mean, the parallels it draws between the four, and the way Tony reacts every goddamn time he sees Teddy and Billy - I should probably warn that this was written way back when Steve was still totally 100% dead and he remains dead for the entire story - and. just. Holy crap, this story is amazing. Tony's at the emotional core, which is a thing I always appreciate, and the way Tony grows and he just, he feels older and tired and maybe a touch wiser and a shitload sadder, and his relationship with Shannon, and the way Steve and Shannon shape his relationship with Sharon - (I sometimes think of this as the story where Tony and Sharon raise Steve's kid.)

I get chills when the new-New old-Young Avengers are standing up there in front of press and Shannon says, "Avengers Assemble!" Which, I think, says a lot about the quality of storytelling, and good lord it is quality.

Title: Resurrection-verse
Authors: [personal profile] elspethdixon & [personal profile] seanchai
Characters: Tony/Steve, Peter/MJ, Luke/Jessica/Danny, Sharon/Winter Soldier, Hank/Jan, ensemble (Marvel 616)
Length: 150,000+
Summary: Doom brings Steve back from the dead. Hijinks ensue, some of which might vaguely be considered plot. Surprisingly, this isn't actually crack-fic -- it's just Marvel.

I've been putting off writing this rec for well over a year, because - here is what I can say about this story: It singlehandedly built the Cap/Tony fandom in a cave, with a box of scraps.

BIGGEST COP-OUT EVER.

Title: In a Different Light
Author: [personal profile] marinarusalka
Characters: Tony/Steve (movieverse)
Length: 20,700 words
Summary: After an unexpected attack, Tony has trouble dealing with his injuries and Steve has trouble dealing with Tony.

(Given the sheer number of hurt/comfort fics the Cap/Tony conglomerate produces, it's little wonder I'm so taken with the pairing.) Fantastic voice for movie!Tony, I can hear RDJ saying the lines in my head, fantastic use of nonlinear narrative, and mmmmf absolutely brilliant Steve. This out of all the stories I've read does the best job of tying a hypothetical movieverse Avengers team into the aftermath of Iron Man, down to little details like the way Tony resists having his head dunked under water. Impressively written and an engrossing read.

Title: When the Lights Go On Again
Author: [personal profile] elspethdixon and [personal profile] seanchai
Characters: Steve/Tony, Hank/Jan, Carol/Wanda, Clint, ensemble (Classic Avengers)
Length: Epic!
Summary: Aliens have invaded earth, and the Avengers are scattered. While Steve leads the resistance, Tony once again finds himself playing captive scientist. In the midst of a violent alien regime, separated by seemingly insurmountable boundaries, Steve and Tony have nothing to keep themselves going but each other.

The last chapter of this behemoth was just posted, so I sat down to finally read it and finished the entire story in one afternoon. What can I say about Elspeth and Seanchai's Steve and Tony? They are the goddesses of this pairing, and they never fail to deliver. What really made this fic stand out from the rest of their works is how well it functions as an ensemble story. My only complaint is that I would've liked more Peter, because he is so perfect as written by these two.

Title: Orbiter Dictum
Author: [personal profile] schmevil
Characters: Tony/Steve (Marvel 616)
Length: 7420 words
Summary: Steve is at the sink, washing the few dishes that pizza for two generates, when he realizes that Tony is in love with him.

Oh, this is just such a lovely, quiet piece. The nonlinear format really works for me - the story starts with Steve's realization and then rewinds to show the progression to that point - and I love the way Tony ditches his business meeting and flies halfway around the world to have pizza with Steve. While I enjoy the more typical "cast of dozens" Avengers story, something that focuses solely on Cap and Tony is all the more a treat, sort of like a slice of apple pie after a three-course meal. Mmm, pie.
