As part of my new commitment to updating M/W/F...!

Title: Sustain (or Concerto for the Famished in D Minor)
Authors: MaybeAmanda and OneMillionAndNine
Pairing: Sherlock/Molly
Length: 76k
Summary: "So now you're behaving like a six year old 'cause he didn't take you along on his honeymoon?" Lestrade said. "Grow the hell up."

Yes, it's het. Yes, it's babyfic. Yes, it's a story that you will devour in one evening. This story is complete and total indulgence, but it's polished, well-written indulgence that never goes easy on Sherlock. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the authors will decide to write a sequel, although the story stands perfectly on its own - it's just that this is the kind of story you want to bury yourself in. Has kind of an old-school feel to it, but it's a good read, an even better re-read, and I guarantee it'll whet your thirst for Sherlock/Molly, of which there is tragically little.

Title: Dust in the Wind
Author: [profile] lyra_wing
Characters: Dean, Sam
Length: ??? (oneshot)
Summary: Future fic. Erm. Hard to explain. This is a crossover with American Gods, but you don't need to read that to understand what's going on.

An absolutely brilliant expansion of Neil Gaiman's American Gods, as lyrical and exact as if he'd written it himself. This is actually the ending to SPN I think fandom yearns for - Sam and Dean riding off into the sunset, chasing after always one more hunt.

Title: Scenes from a Lesser War
Author: Amireal
Characters: John Sheppard/Rodney McKay
Length: 20k
Summary: This. This was something that needed taking care of. In a non-traditional sense.

As I tear through the SGA fandom, I promised myself I wouldn't flood this community with recs (because anything worth recommending in SGA has probably been recommended twice already)...but, yeah, that didn't last.

"Scenes from a Lesser War" is one of those stories that I just - didn't want to end. The story deals with the repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell and its aftermath on Atlantis, which was not a trope I even knew I had a kink for until I was halfway through the fic. It combines the secret relationship, the we-can't-but-we-are, and the delicious, delicious reveal and oh, I could keep reading about this portrayal of the characters as they struggle with this issue eternally, but the ending is satisfying and so deserved.

Title: Getting Eaten Alive
Author: Tandrelmairon
Characters: Clark/Lois (movieverse)
Length: 56,461 words
Summary: The LoisClark relationship the way my sources say it developed, keeping only the legend basics as canon.

This is story of ideas. It's also a beautiful story, and a story populated with exquisite and rounded people, but above all it is a story that rolls through your mind like molasses - slow and sweetly building, both incredibly concrete and so filled with larger concepts as to be almost ethereal. It's one of those stories that I could read once a month for a year and emerge with something new and different every time, and it is still packed full of the sort of character moments that keep me coming back to fiction. The dynamics between Perry, Jimmy, Clark, and Lois - always and especially Clark and Lois - are all the more compelling for Tandrelmairon's fresh retelling.

I'm always a sucker for stories that delve into Clark's alien physiology, too, especially stories that don't paint Clark as too alien. On top of that, this has just about everything else I love in the best Superman stories, right up to a Lois who is the best damn reporter in the game. Forty billion gold stars.

Title: Duty Before Honor
Author: SilverShine
Characters: Kakashi/Sakura
Length: 153,586 words
Summary: Sakura knew why Tsunade didn’t want a virgin on this mission. Things might get out of hand. Acts might be carried out too far. She was glad Kakashi was accompanying her, but right then she wouldn’t have minded the entire population of Konoha.

It took me ages to read this story, because to be honest I was a little put off by the summary - it sounded like, y'know, just one of the fifty frillion harlequin badfics floating around - but then I read another highly recommended story by SilverShine and just wow. Her writing is so good that I want it to be canon, and it's good on every level, from the characterization to the little details that lead verisimilitude to the world of shinobi.

"Duty Before Honor" is about the closest to flat-out romance as I've found in a Naruto story, and as such, it takes on a handful of romance-story cliches. The thing is, though, that the writing is so good that I can actually enjoy the cliches without wading through pages of bad grammar and unbelievable characters. There are touches of realism that really ground it, though, including awkward not-perfect sex, and an added bonus of background Naruto/Sasuke, which only makes the main storyline that much better.

Title: Starship Olisbos
Author: [personal profile] montycrowley
Characters: Sheldon/Penny
Length: 8k+
Summary: This book will either be the death of Penny... or the solution to all her problems.

When I say that everything this woman writes is golden? I mean everything she writes is FRIGGIN' AMAZING. There is not a single aspect of this story in particular that is not utter brilliance, but what elevates the story to genius are the excerpts from a fictional book that parallel Sheldon and Penny's story. GENIUS, I SAY.

Title: Blind Sight
Author: Valerie Jones
Pairing: Remy/Rogue (616 comics)
Length: 320k+ (WIP)
Summary: When Operation: Zero Tolerance turns into a full-fledged mutant hunt, Remy must use all of his resources to keep the X-Men safe while they search for a way to bring Bastion down.

I've started to write the review for this story three times now, and every time I've both completely failed to do the story justice and descended into incoherent and wildly enthusiastic raving by the third or fourth sentence. If I had to pick my single favorite fanfic from any fandom, I'd name "Blind Sight" without a moment of hesitation, so at least I have justification for the difficulty.

(It's worth noting that this is the sequel to Thick as Thieves [written by Valerie and Lori McDonald], which is itself a sequel to Lori's Looking at a Woman. I'd recommend reading both before you start this behemoth; they're rec-worthy stories in their own right and crucial to understanding the background for "Blind Sight.")

So! Actual review time: THIS STORY IS FREAKING AWESOME. (Made it to the third paragraph - new record!) There is not a single thing I do not love about it. Gambit is just - he's GAMBIT, to the very best and fullest extent suggested by the comics. There's one right-between-the-eyes revelation scene after another; I love the sleight of hand Remy uses to misdirect the X-Men, the way he tries to break the world of the Thieves' Guilds to Rogue slowly and how she gets sucked in despite his best efforts anyway. Scott, normally a character much maligned - or at least overlooked - in Remy/Rogue fic, shines, and most of the core X-cast have their moments in the spotlight.

Probably my favorite aspect is the friendship between Remy and Bobby, carried over from "Thick as Thieves." The dynamic may seem like an odd one, but the two play off each other perfectly - but neither does the friendship between Remy and Ororo slip by unnoticed. The Remy/Rogue relationship is everything you could ask for from a story and more. Rogue, like her partner, is fully realized as a character. There are even some fantastic scenes with Mystique, and I'm nothing if not a sucker for the Rogue-Mystique relationship.

Unlike most stories that drag on for fifty or more chapters, my attention did not and has not wandered once. The plotting is - dare I say it - masterful, and there's a great deal of depth to the world of the New York Guild. Epic, romantic, funny, intriguing, action-packed - no, seriously, just go read the thing before I descend back into gibbering. (Especially chapter nineteen. That's gotta be my favorite.)

Title: Knot for Our Heart
Author: [profile] tesla321
Pairing: Mal/River
Length: 25k+
Summary: N/A

Set after the BDM, "Knot for Our Heart" is one of my very favorite stories in any fandom. There's not any overall plot, just a series of scenes that follow Mal and River from the beginning of their relationship. I think this fic, even more than the BDM, is what made me love Mal/River so much; their relationship is so comfortable and low-key that even the rest of the crew don't notice what's going on. River is more than a match for Mal and fully in control of her own facilities, too, so there are none of the squicky power implications that often pop up with the pairing.

Title: The incestuous courtship of the antichrist's bride
Author: [profile] fleshflutter
Pairing: Sam/Dean
Length: 48,000 words
Summary: Sam is trying to become the Antichrist in order to save the world. He has a small army of angels and demons, he has an adoring cult, he has a work of prophecy by Jack Kerouac, and he has Dean. Things are going pretty well until he accidentally signs Dean up as his Beloved Consort, a role that requires sex with the Antichrist on an altar. And that's when things stop going pretty well. Also, the soundtrack to the Apocalypse sucks.

Probably my favorite Sam/Dean story, because if you asked me to name a more favoriter Wincest fic, I could not do it. What does this story have? What does it not have? Crack, drama, crack, incest, crack, bids for the throne of hell, really scorching hot sex, crack, humor, crazy and awesome references to that hack Jack Kerouac, crack, and sex that is no really so scorching hot the author might be obligated to furnish you with sunglasses.

(Also highly recommended: the podfic recording by [personal profile] fayjay, well worth the five hour length - and I say that as a person with little patience for listening to lengthier stories.)
